Right on Time - Hepcat

Hepcat: Deston Berry (vocals, keyboards); Greg Lee, Alex Desert (vocals); Raul Talavera (alto saxophone); Efren Santana (tenor saxophone); Kincaid Smith (trumpet); Dave Fuentes (bass).

Additional personnel: Aaron Owens, Lino Trujillo (guitar); Scott Abels (drums).

Recorded at Sound City, North Hollywood, California.

RIGHT ON TIME is the third release from Hepcat, the eminently soulful nine-piece ska collective. From the title cut's opening groove, the group plays it smooth. The same song features an answering machine message in which singer Greg Lee's father declares that the band is "on time" and downright "scientific." This likable 13-song collection has a sound true to ska's forbears and colored by touches of jazz, swing, and big band.

"The Secret" unfurls its musical tapestry with the ease and smoothness of an island wave. "Pharoah's Dreams" is a warm, up-tempo jazz-meets-ska piece. "Tommy's Song" continues in a jazzier vein, with pleasing Ellingtonian flavorings. "Together Someday" is a doo-wop number, while "Goodbye Street," "Rudies All Around," and "Mama Used to Say" will please listeners seeking a reggae fill.

Scrolls of the Prophet: The Best of Peter Tosh

.

"Get Up, Stand Up," the freedom anthem originally recorded by the Wailers, is given Tosh's personal touch. "Stepping Razor," from EQUAL RIGHTS, tells of his tough teen years in Kingston. Tosh, always the rebel, speaks for all the oppressed people of the world on "Downpressor Man." EQUAL's title track reminds us there can be no peace without justice. Tosh was raised a Christian but later took up the Rasta religion and extolls the virtues of ganga smoking on the title tracks to LEGALIZE IT and BUSH DOCTOR. The later was released on Rolling Stones Records, and also features "Don't Look Back (You Gotta Walk and)" with Mick Jagger. "Mystery Babylon," an unreleased song for Tosh completists, is a reworking of "Babylon Queendom." SCROLLS is the perfect introductory disc to this highly influential artist. Peter Tosh was a freedom fighter with a soulful voice whose message lives on.

Damian Marley - Welcome To Jamrock

"Welcome To Jamrock" is the first single from Damian Marley's album of the same name.

The young Marley talks about Trenchtown, crime, poverty, and political corruption in his first single. Citing that Jamaica is portrayed as a great tourist location, but Jamrock - rife with violent cocaine traffickers - is the harsh reality.

While it may sound to some like Marley is promoting or glorifying Jamaica's high crime rate and violence that he talks about in the song, that is not the case, as he is actually lamenting it. One listen to his whole album and you will hear his many profoundly positive and uplifting messages just like his father before him.

Both the rhythm and the above-mentioned hook are sampled from the 1984 track World-A-Music by Ini Kamoze - the original rhythm on the Ini Kamoze album was provided by Sly and Robbie.

The track also samples the bassline from Zap Pow's hit Reggae Music. An edited version of Welcome to Jamrock was featured on the popular video game franchise FIFA 06.

The song was also on the playlist of the video game Midnight Club 3, but on the Remix version.

Notes

Personnel: Dan Warner (guitar); Stephen Marley (keyboards); Shiah Coore, Paul Fakhourie (bass guitar); Jazzwad, Craig Taylor, Wilburn "Squidley" Cole (drums); Damian Marley (programming); Eek-A-Mouse, Nas, Black Thought, Bobby Brown , Rovleta Fraser, Sean Diedrick, Owen "Dready" Reid, Noel Davey, Bounty Killer.

Recording information: Lion's Den, Miami, Florida (2005).

The huge success of "Welcome to Jamrock," released as a single early in the summer of 2005, raised expectations for Damien Marley's same-titled full-length. Fortunately, everything--from the progressive blend of reggae, hip-hop, trip-hop, pop, and roots within, to the crisp production from brother Stephen Marley--lives up to the hype. While it would be an easy commercial move for Damien to replicate the positive roots vibe of his father's reggae, he instead builds on the consciousness of that music and updates the sound for the 21st century.

Tinged with overtones of dancehall ("Khaki Suit") and urban contemporary R&B (the silky smooth "Beautiful," which features a cameo from Bobby Brown), WELCOME TO JAMROCK is a melting pot of an album, one as well suited to the streets of Brooklyn as the neighborhoods of Kingston. The cover image--which depicts Marley in militaristic garb surrounded by corrugated metal fences--indicates that Marley means business, a fact confirmed by this fresh, edgy music.

Matisyahu - Youth

Youth is an album by Hasidic Jewish reggae singer Matisyahu, which was released on March 7, 2006 (see 2006 in music). It is his second proper studio release, as Live at Stubb's is a live album. The CD quickly shot to the top of iTunes best sellers list the day it was released (partially due to the fact that iTunes ran a special promotion for pre-orders).

The first single from the album is "King without a Crown", which was also a single on Matisyahu's previous album, Live at Stubb's. However, a proper video was shot for the Youth version of the song, whereas the version on the Stubb'sBillboard top 200 albums in the US. On 27 December 2006, Billboard announced that Youth ranked 3rd overall on the 2006 Reggae album charts, immediately behind Live at Stubb's.concert album was accompanied by a concert video. The album spent two weeks at number four in the

The topic of the album is mostly the support and promotion of youth voice, more explicitly in the eponymous second track. The album, along with its topic, mixes Matisyahu's lyrics, which contain several references to his Jewish beliefs, with a mainstream sound.
